Activities - Aruba Diving & Snorkeling
Aruba's underwater attractions are some of its best - an exciting world of sunken warships, colorful coral, and bright tropical fish - making Aruba diving a popular activity among visitors here. Those interested in Aruba diving can become certified first if they choose. Red Sail Sports in Palm Beach is just one of many watersports and tour operators that offers PADI certification courses, with instruction taking as little as four days. As an alternative to Aruba diving, you can always snorkel on the surface. The conditions that make Aruba diving such a draw - calm, clear waters - are also ideal for snorkeling.
There are several great spots to do Aruba diving. Most Aruba diving excursions will make a stop at the wreck of the Antilla, a scuttled World War II era German freighter. Often referred to as the "ghost ship", this coral-filled and 400 hundred foot long vessel (the largest wreck in the Caribbean) makes for great Aruba diving. Another wreck close by, the skeleton of an oil tanker torpedoed by a submarine, is where beginners to Aruba diving often start. The Pedernales is a haven for incalculable species of local fish. Other Aruba diving sites along the protected (Leeward) southwestern shore house schools of moray eels, manta rays, and stingrays who hang about the shallow sandbars and off-shore reefs that ring the island. The best Aruba diving sites to view exotic marine life like this are Malmok Reef, Jane Sea Wreck, Kantil Reef, and Plonco Reef.
